I got an official dx and meds for my son through a neurologist, he was 5, the "official age is 7". However there is more information and technology available now then 3 yrs ago when DSM-5 made the changes on the Autism Spectrum Disorder. Personally I think it will become a stronger medical disorder than psychological. A neurologist can dx both. The earlier you can start getting help, and treatment (not necessarily saying medicate, I didn't till he was in school) the more progress your child will have. Texas has a program through CPS called ECI (Early Childhood Intervention) it was where I hears ASD for the first time he was 18 months

Thanks for asking this question, by the way. My son is eleven and back when he was diagnosed, everyone flat out refused to diagnose until four years old. This whole thread is very interesting to me. Are we seeing signs of autism on ct scans now? I've been crossing my fingers for a more objective diagnosis method for... Well, seven years.

Our boy was diagnosed with ASD at 18 months from a neurologist and it was one of the best things we did. Having the prescription/diagnosis in hand gave us the ability to apply for all sorts of services and also to get insurance to cover certain things

I was told by my daughters school they would only accept the diagnosis if it was made by a neurologist. The neurologist gave my daughter the diagnosis but wanted it confirmed by the developmental pediatrician. Then I took both letters back to the school.

30% of asd children have the possibility of having epilepsy as a co-morbid condition. They will run blood tests and check for other neurological disorders including epilepsy..Talk to your ped about the right questions to ask. We performed an EEG to rule it out. It was difficult to achieve but we were glad that we did it and ruled out other indications.
