How And When Should I Transition To A Toddler Bed?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 26 month old has gotten pretty good about laying down for bed when I put him in his crib. Should I transition him to a toddler bed soon? Is sooner better? Anyone recently done this? I'm worried he will get up during the night and I won't know it if he isn't contained in his crib.

As long as he's not attempting to crawl out of his crib, I say stick to the crib. Once the crib becomes a safety issue, then make the transition into a toddler bed. If his crib can convert into a toddler bed, that saves you money and it's an easier transition than going to a new bed. If the crib does not convert into a bed (Some event eventually convert into a twin bed...) then luckily most toddler beds are low to the ground and have bed rails.

When you go to transition him, if it's a new bed, have both the crib and the new bed in the room if the space allows it and let him play on/use the new bed during the day so he gets used to it. Then after a week if you need to, let him fall asleep in the crib then move him to the toddler bed so he wakes up in it. And eventually remove the crib from the room. But explain to him what is going on, he's getting to be a big boy and now he gets to use a big boy's bed.

My son stayed in his crib until he was 4 as the height of the rails comforted him. He could climb out, but generally he stayed put. He tends to be pretty quiet and since I'm a light sleeper, I used baby monitors. It was an added measure to make me feel better. When we transitioned, we went to a loft bed that had some height on the sides.

This is the bed we are using. Little man loves it!

I agree - if it aint broke, don't fix it. When he was two, we transitioned him to a toddler bed (we had to put all the toys away each night and the door locked from the outside - we knew that he was in a safe space if he got up.)

One night he kept himself up all night (we didn't get much sleep that night) and then had several seizures early the next morning. After that we un-transitioned him back to the crib (glad we didn't remove it when we introduced the toddler bed!) and he remained there for a few more years until he started putting himself to bed in the toddler bed. He's got bunk beds now and while this new house doesn't have locking doors, we still put a gate across the door at night so that if he does get up, he remains in a safe place.

I tried to make the switch but my daughter wouldn't stay in bed and seemed really frightened. So for now I am letting her stay in her crib since she sleeps well and doesn't climb out. I will try again by 4. I think maybe I will try taking the front of her crib off before switching beds again but not sure if that will help. Maybe your little guy will like a bigger bed and have no problems good luck!
