Does Anyone's Else Child Hate Car Rides?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My daughter Aaleyah is 6 and she hates any type of car ride. She will scream the whole way, head bang and sometimes get out of her seatbelt. We can only go a short distance or nowhere at all... I only drive when i have to. So 98% of the the time I'm at home, what else could i do?

My son did this between the ages of 2 to 3 maybe a little longer, until it had gotten to the point where he would unbuckle and climb in the front while I was driving, almost caused many accidents, when i would strap him in tightly he would harm himself to try and get out. I realized that his problem was that when his straps were on his shoulders he could not rock in his car seat because they prevented the movement. I asked the doctors what I should do and they said if it causing more harm than good then I should take his arms out of the straps even though It is not recommended

So although I sound like a horrible parent right now, I took his arms out of the straps and tightened the crotch belt area and ensure that his car seat is very securely attached to the car and ever since there has not been a problem, he can rock and calm himself.

If your daughter is a rocker like my son that may be the issue.

My son is 5 now and I am still trying to find a safer option that makes me feel better but that also gives him the ability to move as he needs.

I am so surprised that there are no autism friendly car seats or car seat straps.

I hope this helps.

It's not easy to deal with. I know they have some type of special straps for the car but they are impossible to find and I think they may be airplane ones...?
