18 & Up (adult) Children
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I desperately need to connect w those who have adult ASD children. This is a whole new ballgame when drs consider them independent of you, even though they’re not. Also, all the other challenges of transitioning into adulthood.

On social media, Twitter in particular, search up #actuallyautistic. They're the ones who can give you real advice--they're autistic themselves.

There are MANY many autistic adults online! Autistic people thrive online. Please start by joining the Autism Inclusivity Facebook group. Lots of autistic people have YouTube channels. Please help your child search some up so they can find mentors!

You need to go to Australian and UK websites. US is far behind.

Vent alert: Scroll past if you like but I have to let this out as I have no one to talk to. I’m having a difficult time relinquishing control now that my son is technically an adult. Challenge is: he doesn’t look and/or present like he has any challenges & drs expect him to be independent of me. With pediatric drs they all knew his history but now we have to establish new caregivers & they don’t really take the time to read over records. Now he needs counseling for sexuality issues & the kid is so honest but also literal so things don’t come out as they should & I’m terrified they will try to put him in a box of a certain diagnosis & not take the time to see the entire picture and/or ask me bc of privacy laws. They have so much power & I can’t protect him like before. How do you deal w all of this??

We became our daughter's legal guardians, because she is has autism isn't high functioning, primarily non-verbal and is legally an adult. We are now in the process of trying to find a program or activity for her to participate in because she misses school.
