Members shared their experiences navigating the difference between power of attorney and guardianship when managing finances and benefits for adult children with disabilities, with several noting that POA is often easier to obtain and less restrictive than guardianship. Many members described practical steps they've taken, including working with lawyers to establish both medical and financial POA, setting up separate bank accounts for SSI payments, obtaining state IDs, and using notarized documents downloaded online for tasks like paying bills and scheduling appointments. A recurring theme was the importance of planning ahead while children are still minors, advocating with institutions like Social Security and banks to accept POA documents, and recognizing that grandparents or non-parent caregivers may face additional hurdles in being recognized as legal representatives.

The bank took a copy of my POA today. Opened the first of 2 accounts for her SSI. Need another one for her back payments. And more rules to follow. Tomorrow is her birthday. 19 and a senior in high school.

My brother and my husband both printed POA off of the internet and my Husbands included medical something or other. Notarized and works great for elderly care. Not sure about our kids yet. I just haven't gotten to it. My son is more high functioning and I just tend to go to his appt with him.

I printed off the paperwork for POA but never actually did it. Will this summer, we really just need it to pay the insurance bills and talk on the phone, make appts etc.
