Is It Normal For My Child With Autism To Be Crying And Irritable Most Of The Time?! Help!
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Lately my child is always mostly crying and irritable for every single freaking thing. He is going through puberty but it seems like it's a little too much. Every morning, every afternoon, every evening. I don't know what to do. It's driving me nuts. He has some moments of happiness but it doesn't last long. I just don't know what to do. We can't even take him anywhere because he throws himself or randomly get pissed off for we don't know what? It's like out of nowhere things set him off and I… read more

Hi! I wanted to share some of our experience. We have a boy and girl. Our son has autism and intelectual disability and is non verbal as well. Our daughter is typically developed. Puberty made our son more irritable, he even would get physical with his dad and I. It was a hard process. Our daughter became more emotional and reserved. Even though our son has autism, he was still a boy going through puberty. He’s 17 now, and he’s already taller and stronger than me! My husband and I try to find ways in which he can put all his energy to good use. He cannot play basketball or any other sport, but he can run. In his case, that has helped a lot. To God be the glory.

I wish I knew back then what I know now. Eventually, things do get better! Blessings to you and your family!

Around 7 or 8 my son was always irritable and crying and having meltdowns. After frequent trips to the doctor and some to the ER and urgent care, seems like the consensus was constipation was the issue. Puberty is definitely here now, there's hair places there wasn't before. There are still a lot of meltdown s and crying and stuff. About 8 was when my child started seeing a child psychiatrist. He started abilify and it's been helpful leveling him out. There are still moments and even though constipation was a lot of the cause, a good psychiatrist was the most helpful solution out of pediatrician, dietician, etc. Every kid and family is different and have different needs. If you can get a room where everything is childproof, nothing can be knocked over or ran into and there are no hard things to throw, you can leave your kid in that room for 10 or 15 mins to calm down and have 10 mins for yourself to breathe in another room. Best of luck.

Oh no! It does sound like puberty hang in there! Is there a certain activity he likes ? Like drawing listening to music etc when he gets like this do you offer any of this to him? Is he able to communicate with you at all? Mine is moderately verbal and will say what is bothering him but not into great detail etc his been the same way just very irritable his going threw a hard time sleep phase so yeah lucky us.. don’t hesitate to reach out to your doctor it could also be his feeling unwell? And not being able to communicate it also a nice walk could help specially in the evening when sun goes down like a nature trail walk that really helps mine
