What Structure Works For Your Child At Home?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

So I’m really wanting to add structure to my household my son is 8 his autistic and has adhd we have tried structure for him like that of school but he flat out refused we did visuals reward chart etc all failed and now when his home he gets very overwhelmed and bored and that’s when he gets into biting himself etc I was wanting to get ideas from this community on what works in your household to get some ideas my son is very environmental but we really want structure for him

The charts don't work for my son either. We just do regular routine and like sweetie above I try to give him choices as well. Time for bedtime- we can read a book during or after bath? Time to eat you can have Mac and cheese or a hot dog? To keep him busy on weekends from boredom we try to do stuff he is interested in, can go to library and play games on computer or get books on stuff your interested in, or we can play a game at home on phone. I try to do things he wants to do to fill boredom.

This is a little tricky. But what worked for my son was a regular routine. The routines have changed throughout the years, but he does like to follow one.

During weekends, days off, and school breaks, the schedule is flexible, but I like to give my son choices. If nothing is planned (like today), I tell him what is going to happen. He went to his grandmother’s house this morning so I told him to get dressed and brush his teeth.

I don’t know if this is helpful information to you. What helped me is I observed him very closely to find out what his interests are and followed his lead.
