How Do You Know It’s Right?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My daughter is level one. She is in mainstream school and has reached all her goals. We’re working on her skills for 2nd grade now. I’m working with her on staying seated and doing her work, and we’re still working on doing her daily morning routine. She has Encopresis and has accidents overnight. She will get up and play instead of going to the bathroom in the morning. She hasn’t had daytime accidents since summer break began, and she goes to the bathroom on her own during the day. My son is 14 and still not fully potty trained due to the same factors. He easily goes for number two to use the bathroom but when it comes to urinating he will just go in his depends. What has helped tremendously is a timer. I use the same alarm sound (we use bell sounds that aren’t too harsh) and I did this for every 30 mins for him to get used to the sound. Now whenever he hears that alarm sound he gets up and goes to the bathroom. Maybe you could try that for a day or two just normal day hours. So she can recognize “oh that’s the bathroom bell” then.. set an alarm for her to wake up to it. If you know about when she usually wakes up I would just set it for maybe 10-15 min before that and then again 30 mins later. That way she will hear it twice if she doesn’t go. Hope that helps some. I have also seen watches with this same idea, my son just does not like to wear anything on his wrists.

Thank you! I’ve set an alarm for every hour. I’m usually getting up before she does. She has a morning alarm but it’s different. I will ask her if she has to go potty, and if she doesn’t go at the alarm then it’s not much after that she will go on her own. I just have to get up with her first thing in the morning to remind her to go before she gets a chance to play.
