How Do I Make Him Go To Sleep?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 22 year old non verbal autistic son struggles to go to sleep every night even though he takes medication, him not sleeping stresses me out because he needs sleep, and I also have to tap his chest every night because he can’t sleep by himself and he always needs someone with him, I am with him all night and I can’t get sleep myself until he can get his sleep, I hope I can find a solution to this problem please give suggestions, Thank you!

That sound very challenging and I feel for you. I recommend you don't give up in trying to find a different medicine that might actually work. Also just a few tips 1. try a physical activity in the evening such as a walk or something, play basketball whatever it may be to try to tire him a little. 2. try some aroma therapy such as lavender in a vaporizer or other calming scents. 3. play some soothing music or sounds. God bless you and that special kid of yours.

Medication used for sleep are clonidine, trazodone, mertazapine, low doses of seroquel. All have to be checked with other meds kid/young adult on and check with other health conditions. I listed them in order of risk and listed in order of age they usually rx ( for example clonidine is given in 5 year olds). Sleep is important and yes some do not work and make kids worse. Clonidine works for so many kids and it was absolutely awful for us. Keep working with your doctor or find a neurologist or a sleep doctor. Do not give up. No drug is perfect but you should hope for at least 5/7 decent nights 🤞. Mertazapine/name brand remeron is pretty safe and very sedating to most at a very low dose. I wish you luck. But if what u are trying makes him worse stop and try something else

My son is 12. but he has the same issues. So on days when melatonin (we choose not to take prescribed medication) doesn't work ... we will go out, take a walk and stretch, and do what most adults do when they can't go to bed.

Sometimes, I let him be in the bathtub and add some lavender Epsom salt to calm his nerves.

I monitor what he does, eats, and drinks during the day or week because they affect my son's sleeping patterns.

I also invested in depression light; I bought it from Amazon.

I did talk to the doctors many times but all they say is to give him the medicine, which doesn’t work at all it actually makes his behavior way worse.
