I think it all depends on the person and their needs and wants. Does he wish to be on his own yet, or is he happy staying at home for the time being (and what are your wishes for him as well?)? I know I wouldn't have been ready to live on my own yet in my 20s, and heck, I'm still not. It's not in my near future plans, either. I know I'll need to someday, but I'm taking it one day at a time. Do you think his internship is preparing him for work one day? It sounded like things were going well with it :)

@A MyAutismTeam Member yes, that's exactly what it is :) Some people use residential as a stepping stone while others see it as a long-term situation. There are people who will always need that support, and then there are people who might just need it at first and then as they gain skills, are able to live independently.

According to my son’s service coordinator, we could start looking now (tours) so we have an idea about what we like or dislike. I know everyone’s situation is different. We are looking in to day programs. He’ll be 19 years old this month.

Autie4Lyfe83, he does talk about having his own place and wanting to work where he can walk to his job but it sounds like wishful thinking. I don't know what it means to live in a residential home and I thinks it's a place to live and receive services to gain independence,is this true?
