We had the doctor appointment today and he wants us to do 1mg melatonin at bedtime and if she wakes up a dose of childrens zyrtec. I am to keep a sleep log for two weeks and will go from there. He highly suspects ADHD along with the ASD diagnosis but is holding off until the next appointment and results of sleep log. I just bought a 12lb weighted blanket. We are trying it tonight. Fingers crossed!

Why Sleep is Difficult in ASD
Behavioral Factors: Resistance to bedtime, difficulty with transitions, lack of routine.
Sensory Issues: Sensitivity to light, sound, or touch.
Melatonin Irregularities: Issues with this sleep-regulating hormone.
Anxiety & Repetitive Behaviors: Heightened anxiety, rocking, or hand-flapping.
Neurobiology: Genetic factors affecting circadian rhythms.
Co-occurring Conditions: ADHD, GERD, epilepsy, or restless legs syndrome.
How Poor Sleep Impacts Daytime
Worsens ASD Symptoms: More hyperactivity, aggression, self-stimulation.
Impaired Executive Function: Difficulty with planning, focus, and impulse control.
Increased Family Stress: Affects parents' sleep and well-being.
Strategies to Improve Sleep
Create a Predictable Routine: Consistent bedtime activities like a warm bath, story, or quiet music.
Optimize the Sleep Environment: Dark, cool, quiet room; use blackout curtains or white noise.
Limit Screens: Reduce blue light from phones, tablets, and TV before bed.
Manage Diet: Avoid caffeine.
Use Visual Aids: Timers or visual schedules for bedtime steps.
Daytime Activity: Ensure enough exercise.
Professional Help: Medical evaluation for underlying issues; consider melatonin or other medications if needed.

Eastins sleep patterns go up and down. I noticed that in the winter months, when he isn't as active, it's usually once a week.
