Anyone have issues getting their autistic kiddos to drink water? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Currently using a cirkul water bottle to try to ween him off of sugar free juice

Hi for us my kid never liked water or any other drinks. He only like Tropicana orange juice. So within 6 months to a year I started to water down his juice with water little by little like if I give a full sip cup of juice I'll take a centimeter off and add water instead and then 2 cm and on. Not sure if it makes sense, but I did up until he could go any further. He will not just drink juice up until this day, but his juice is super water down with a little bit of orange juice. With time I was also able to use other brands of orange juice too. I would love for him to just drink water alone, but we are happy where we are. Also for my son he had a preferred sip cup that he needs to see what is it inside. He wanted to make sure there is juice in there lol.You can try that hope it helps 🥰

Oct 1, 2024 — Electrolyte drinks can be beneficial. You can have water waiting for them on their nightstand to drink right after waking

Scenario A: Not Drinking Enough Water (Dehydration Risks)

Many autistic individuals struggle with interoception (difficulty feeling internal body signals like thirst) or have sensory aversions to the taste, temperature, or "flat" texture of plain water.
• Adjust Temperature and Flavor: Experiment with cold, ice-cold, or room-temperature water, or add natural fruit infusions, sugar-free flavor drops, or allergen-checked electrolyte mixes.
• Address Texture and Delivery: Use novelty straws, character cups, or alternative equipment like chewable-friendly spouts or squeeze bottles if standard cups cause aversive reactions.
• Incorporate Water-Rich Foods: Supplement fluids using fresh cucumbers, watermelon, grapes, oranges, popsicles, or yogurt.
• Establish Visual Schedules: Use a labeled or marked water bottle with hourly lines, paired with gentle visual timers, or watch/phone alarms to prompt sips throughout the day.
• Monitor Output: Check urine color—pale yellow indicates good hydration, while dark or strong-smelling urine signals a need for more fluids.
