We live in Hillsborough county in florida...in December she will move from Early Steps into Child Find. She is Autistic and non verbal. Are there any other options besides a full day of school through child find? I dont work and would feel more comfortable at least right now with something more like VPK hours and maybe keeping her in her therapies. Any advice, suggestions??? Thank you.
Have you connected with other moms in your area? I was very worried long ago when my son was sent to school at three, but he actually thrived with the structure of the day. He loved learning new things. We scheduled his therapy for after school. The best advice I can give you is to start learning everything you can about IDEIA (The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act). You will learn how to mold your daughter's IEP to keep her goals on target and guide her education. A good place to start is to read "Emotions to Advocacy" by Pete and Pat Wright. Good luck.
I agree early intervention does wonders! 2 yrs pre-k . now 9 also.:-D pasco county fl.
I'm not in FL, but looking at moving there. Just wanted to agree that full time school at age 3 was the BEST thing I ever did for my autistic son, now age 10. He was nonverbal classic, now highly due to his 3-5 yr old schooling, he is high functioning and the autistic characteristics are hardly noticeable! Good luck! Yes the seperation is hard at first for both you and your 3 year old, but it was the best decision I have ever made!
