We are getting on in years and are worried about our son's living arrangements. He is unable to live on his own and we would like to find a group living situation where the quality of care is good. We are pursuing options and want to know what other parents are doing.
Our 25-year-old autistic son is still living with us and will probably be living with us for many years to come. Your situation is probably different from mine, because my son is functioning on the level of a 3-year-old and is quite happy to occupy a bedroom in our home as he has all of his life.
We remodeled part of our basement into an accessory apartment so that we can eventually have someone live in there to help us with our son. Also, one of our daughters wants to take care of her autistic brother when we are no longer able to do so.
The idea about some parents getting together and buying a home together sounds interesting. Those parents would have to learn a lot about city codes, etc. but it would be nice to have some sense of control over the group home situation where their offspring were residing.
I'm with you! Our son is a sweet 22 year old boy. High functioning in many ways, but can never live on his own. Definitely not the independent living type. He functions much better with people around. I'm trying to lay the ground work on securing his future in case I meet my maker. Scary stuff to,think about.
Yes, we as parents have been talking about that very thing. I think it's a matter of connecting with other like mind families. I would contact Autism Speaks and ask them to begin a tab for that very thing so that families that are ready to launch into this project can connect.
I have heard of other families doing this, would love to find other parents in our area that are interested in a solution like this
Thanks for all of your responses. Our son does not have any siblings, so we are concerned about who will look out for him. Autism Speaks may be the place to contact!
