I do not know what the exact statistics are but it is possible and it is fairly common, but often if you have more than one they are at different levels.
I know people that have one ASD child and other NT children and then I also know people that have multiple ASD children but also have NT children.
I have two ASD children an 8 year old son and a 7 year old daughter both on the spectrum, my daughter more on the severe side and my son on the moderate side.
We have decided not to have another child because of the risk and our age combined just to be safe, although we wanted to try for another hoping they would be NT
Thank you... I will continue with my intervention ... as I continue to see very strange things... very different than my son w/ autism.. but I do reaize there is wide variety of autism... Thank you to all...
Odds are increased by something like 50% that subsequent children of the same parents will be on the spectrum once you have one child who is. My first son is not on the Spectrum, but both of my younger two are. I would get him screened. Take him to a doc, tell them his sibling has ASD and this child is doing __________, which is causing some concern. The earlier the diagnosis if that's what's going on, the better off the child will be in the long run. Early intervention, they say, is the key.
I have 1 daughter and 2 sons- only one of my boys is on the spectrum. Don't worry, but be proactive.
I totally understand. When I was 5 1/2 months pregnant with my youngest my then 2 1/2 year old son was diagnosed with autism and my 13 year old daughter was diagnosed severely bipolar. Our world was rocked to the core. I wanted my son to have a sibling to play with. All of a sudden I had two children with serious disabilities and another on the way. Not what we had planned for for sure.
