Richmond, VA? My son's most-excellent, former special ed teacher moved to Richmond VA!
If you want to message me your contact info, I have several connections in Richmond that I can check with.
When my son was young, we found a DAN Doctor in Richmond, VA who we visited several times for early interventions. Has anyone had good or bad experiences with DAN Doctors? Do they still exist and serve our community?
I went to consult with a child psychologist about my 4yr old son regarding some behavior issues typically seen in children going through divorce. While I do understand the need for doctor/patient confidentiality, I do not feel comfortable allowing a 4yr old (autistic child) to be alone in a room with an adult I do not know extremely well. My question is this: Has anyone else come across this with a child psychologist? Please share any suggestions that may be useful. Thanks.
I always tell the dr that I need to be present because my son is afraid of strangers and will not cooperate. I usually don't have a problem when I say that.

I work in early childhood education and while we can’t diagnose we can screen and refer. I did our screenings on my daughter and with the results consulted for a screening and have been placed on a wait list. Unfortunately in our area the wait list is almost 2 years long. I am struggling to get support from those around us as it’s hard for them to believe she would have autism. My parents especially, I know it’s contributing to outdated views. Any advice?

We became my grandson's guardian in 2015. He had a IEP from the school system he came from for ADHD. It was recommended that we have him clinically tested for ASD by his Case Worker, his Therapist and his Case Manager when he came to us. We did this and he was diagnosed with ASD. I took the report to the school and requested a ARC meeting to have his IEP evaluated. They called in the systems psychologist (who is not a doctor) and because he tested above their threshold they refused to accept… read more

The current school son attends is not accommodating his needs. They refuse to re do his iep and put his doghouse in it as well as special recommend drives they should do for him. My son is failing kindergarten and everyone I request a meeting I get no where do now my next step is to get him out of there and somewhere where they can help him more. Any suggestions ?
There are several in the area, but it did take some time to find the 'right fit' for our son.
One option could be SECEP - which works with local schools on the southside.
Davis is 7 yrs old who was finally diagnosed this month. The hospital said they were going to refer him to a therapist nearby. Just wanted a little more insight or experience on it.
It's important to note that ABA therapy is not the only approach available for supporting individuals with autism. Different individuals may respond to various interventions differently. If you have… read more
