Anyone Have A ASD Child Still Stuck On Baby Food?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is 3 years old and is still stuck on the stage 2 baby foods. He will eat that, yogurt, spaghettios, and yogurt melts. I can’t get him to eat anything different than that. I’ve tried everything even mashed foods like mashed potatoes he won’t eat. He won’t eat ice cream, mac n cheese, cereal, oatmeal, eggs...etc you name it I’ve tried it. What can I do to get him to try to eat something different? Anything I try he literally takes his fingers and pulls whatever it is off his tongue even if… read more

I agree with @A MyAutismTeam Member . We’ve been doing feeding therapy and I somehow can’t see the therapy being successfully done in a school setting. We get it through a speech therapist who specializes in feeding. It can take months to years of regular therapy. You wouldn’t want to take long breaks during school holidays either. Feeding therapy has been miraculous for us.

I suggest checking into what feeding therapy facilities there are outside of school because a clinic is focused on your child for each session & the school system is not set up for individual feeding therapy. It may be tough to find one with after school hours available, but it’s worth checking into.

My son had the same eating issues. He would only eat baby food and wet/moist food like oatmeal, yougart etc. We spent a little over a year doing food therapy and it helped immensely!!! He definitely had some oral sensory issues and needed the help. He eats great now (steak, eggs, chicken, broccoli). I understand the scary feelings of not being able to have your child eat. I highly recommend reaching out to an experienced Food Therapist. It was a huge stress relief for us.

My son is almost 7 now but started having issues with food at about 3 yrs old. I didn’t know he was on the Spectrum until he was close to 4-5 years old and by then the foods he would tolerate had been reduced to about 5 things. I think the window for feeding therapy closed. He is now resistant to therapy. If I would have known what was happening I would have done it when he was 3.

Last night, he asked to taste the walnuts I was munching on. I was so happy but did not let on. He took one nibble and said “no thank you”. Within about 10 minutes his eyes looked like Robert Deniro’s in Raging Bull. Unfortunately, this sort of reinforced that new foods are potentially harmful and nuts are evil.

Just saying, start therapy early (if you can) before it gets complicated .
