For the people who have kids who are going to or graduated from high school how was it for them? Did they take regular classes? With autism on the rise I hope the work force does not discriminate against them as adults? Hope you all have a blessed day and thank you for reading my question.
I'm autistic and was diagnosed at 31, so I was in all mainstream classes. I graduated from high school in 2001, and college in 2006 (with a Bachelor's in Social Work). I work three jobs in human… read more
We are hoping to move north, closer to his work in the next couple years, but I am terrified to change schools/districts for my son. He had a very traumatic experience at his first school---due to kids and staff treating him badly and he regressed terribly. He is in a decent situation now, progressing and I hate to change it. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to research special ed program ratings for districts/schools? My son is high functioning, and they seem to get the worst bullying… read more
This is just an update after 3 years... life had gotten so busy, I had almost forgotten the Internet existed! ;) Well, we did make that move north, from Or, to Wa. My son has been in junior high… read more
My daughter is not able to take the regular ed. classes, we decided the certificate of completion would be less stressful on her. However, I get a little angry that my daughter has stuck with school & puts in more effort than most kids, yet she is not allowed to get a regular High School diploma. I thought school was about learning to each childs best ability, not punishing someone who was born with special needs. Is there anyone else who feels this way or can give me some advice?
My son will be entering high school next year. His Special Day teacher recommended a certification of completion path because of the stress level of the diploma track and his lack of focus and ability… read more
I'm worried that Ryan will be forced to give up his unique perspective to comply and fit into mainsteam classes. He is only in Pre-K and there is pressure being applied to get him out of special ed into regular Kindergarten by next year. I feel they dont know him well enough, and with his delays I think it's setting him up for failure
Can I hear from parents with children that have gone the route into mainstreaming, and some thoughts on how to deal with the fear that my son is going to be… read more
I homeschool one of my kids for this reason. BUT not all parents can or have the patience to. So for me. I was mainstreamed but also put in special ed classes. Most the kids in Special education were… read more
My son will be turning 5 years old this December. He was just recently diagnosed with mild to moderate autism and a language disorder.Right now, he is going to a regular Head Start.Last week, I had an IEP meeting for my son.I brought up that I wanted him in occupational therapy for motor skills(recommended by the psychologist who assessed him)and in ABA therapy. They said that if I wanted the ABA therapy, then he needs to go to a autism class.I get to go and observe 1 autism class on Oct. 24th… read more

I playfully hope there are programs that will support our children with autism as adults? With autism on the rise so much this should be a top priority. Will there ever be a cure for autism? Like me all of you want your children to adapt to life as much as possible when they are older. Especially for people who have a only child like we do. Thanks all in advance for reading my comment.
I was really lucky to be able to talk and do several miniate things but was not good at somethings there again wife is a big help.
Anyone here have an adult or transitioning teen who has been found too intelligent for government programs but not an ideal candidate for standard college and still lacks skills for employability? What solutions have you found?
We are currently hopeful with our son having been accepted to a hands-on college associate's degree in his area of interest in culinary arts. We are working to have him supported by a program, College Learning Experience, that specializes in higher functioning autistics… read more

His special education teacher mentioned that they may mainstream my son for half of the day because he is so intelligent. My take is leave him where he is because the small amount of children is why he is able to do so well. Give him third grade work instead of 2nd. Challenge his brain while he stays in a comfortable and low key setting.
Your son is 14 with aspergers and highly intelligent. We took a middle course sending him to private school with classrooms of 18-20, and they would move him up grades based on the subject. For… read more
My son was just diagnosed with PDD-nos at 10 years old. I'm having problems getting the school to cooperate, and I have this other therapist guy insisting my son has ADHD. Very frustrated with it all right now. Any suggestions?
I have argued again and again with 2 people who are in the school district about the issue of diagnosis. Some teachers in schools will argue back and forth on this and I'm saying - they are ignorant… read more
I am in CA. My son is in kinder (hf asd/adhd). I had an IEP meeting on Thursday & was told IEP is refused since he is near passing grade level & not failing. The issue is he is sitting under a table during most class time if not chosen to be a helper. He has also had a min. Of 5 head injuries since October at school. Tripping, lack of focus/excitement, kicked, head butted (lack of awareness of spatial distance/personal space/lacking social cues
