We Home School Our 13 Year Old Autistic Daughter. Is This The Best Kind Of Schooling For Children Of This Nature?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

Our daughter is constantly angry and hates school no matter what. We just moved to LA last August 2013. When we went to visit our local public school for her to attend she broke out in tears. She said mommy I don't want to go to public school any more.

My husband and I have a new business we opened in January 2014. We are still trying to find clients.

Our daughter, Shoshana is also in the process of having braces on her teeth. We understand her pain. We totally understand her difficulties.

I Wanted To Ask Parents To Know How Well Their Autistic Child Transitioned From Elementary To Middle School?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

Even though my son is currently in 2nd grade, I can't help but wonder about his future especially once he finishes Elementary. My son is no longer in special education classes but he does need help in a lot of things. His school work for now isn't an issue, it's the normal everyday things he needs help with. Like opening his food, having to supervise him getting dressed, reminding him about things he needs to do etc. I'm just concerned about how he's going to do in middle school. Like the… read more

Pets?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

My son is really wanting a puppy. We have an old dog, and I was waiting until he passes on to doggy heaven to get puppies (I have twins - so I would have to get 2). How helpful is having a pup to a child with Asperger's and SPD?

A MyAutismTeam Member

It depends on the ASD child. My son only likes certain pups/dogs. We already had the dog when my son was born and by the age of 3 my son decided he didn't like the dog touching him. However, he loves… read more

Maybe practice spitting something like applesauce out in the sink when he is not sick? You can demonstrate and try to make it fun, just so he gets used to the mechanics of doing this. I also keep a… read more

Is It Common For Someone On The Spectrum To Steal?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

I've read that stealing is not something that goes along with autism. However, I've researched this a little bit and have found that many people ask questions about it. My grandson doesn't "steal" in the truest sense of the word, but he does take things that aren't his, like pencils, scissors, and other random items. When asked, he as no real answer about why he does it.

My kids do not understand boundaries and most social norms. They have an impulse to grab something and it is extremely difficult to stop them. We focus on what “to do” rather “not doing” - ask for the… read more

Why Does My Daughter Get Overwhelmed And Cry When I Tell Her Of Things Ahead Of Time?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

My daughter is excited about reading night at school tonight. Yesterday I told her that I was getting her tested for a problem with her handwriting in June and she started crying. I asked her why and she just says there’s a lot of things going on. And that she has counseling at school next Week. And just a lot of things coming up that she doesn’t really have to worry about right now and I told her that. I asked her why she was obsessed. She didn’t know. But she calmed down and said that she was… read more

Why Does She Scream?!
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

Vanessa will scream when I ask her to pick up anything. Or if I ask her a question. I don’t know why. Yesterday she got craft paper all over the floor. I asked her what she’d do if I asked her to pick it up. She screams like she’s anxious or afraid. But she does it while looking at me and smiling like it’s on purpose. I don’t know if she’s doing that so I will pick it up for her or what. What can I do? I sat down and helped her put the paper away and prompted her a few times to keep doing it… read more

Have you tried timers? I use them for everything I need my daughter to do. I even have it in her IEP. It gives them a time of when the expectation is to be done.
