Receptive Speech Not Improving
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

We had a meeting with our speech therapist yesterday... They did some tests and they show that My son's expressive speech and ability to produce sounds improved a lot, however they saw almost no improvement in his receptive speech... They don't know why and they say that usually they see the opposite. 😥
We notice the same thing at home. He will say or approximate words but they are random... Very random
Does anyone have any ideas how to improve receptive speech and understanding? Thank you in… read more

I agree with Adrisab above. I think the answer to your question could be very complicated. I would consider going back to the basics and adding some basic movement and sensory work to your son's… read more

Are You Aware Of Specific Tests/evaluations The Should Be Completed To Address Your Child's Unique Needs?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

If we agree that all children on the spectrum may have different needs as it relates to a particular child, then we must agree that there are various means of determining what methodology would help a particular child, academically, socially, emotionally, behaviorally. That being said, are you aware that testing your child in all areas of functioning should be completed? If so, did you rely on the school district to determine the testing? Are you aware of the federal special education… read more

Autism Assessment
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 6 year old daughter was assessed by a psychiatrist as having characteristics at the age of 3.5. She was labeled as being developmentally delayed and labeled as pdd-nos. We took her to a developmental pediatrician who said that she was not on the spectrum, but sent her for an ados test. The ados test was administered and they said that she was PDD-NOS. The test was not administered in the best environment in that she sat in a car seat in traffic for 2 hours. The developmental pediatrician… read more

Yes, I would definitely fight to keep the eligibility through the school. In my experience having it will open the gate for services depending in the state you live in. Check your state's autism… read more

Homeschooling
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am seriously considering homeschooling my son after preschool is over. I am worried about his social skills with homeschooling, but I worry more about his education and one on one attention in public schools. The preschool teacher already warned me most of her students parents opt to home school once they hit kindergarten age. Any advice?

Homeschooling would have been a big mistake for my daughter. School was difficult, but she learned so much about life and people and the real world there. Social skills were so critical and exposure… read more

What Age Did Your Child Start Talking? Did They Say Any Words?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My daughter is 3 she was diagnosed in March. She does not talk yet. She does day her ABC's point out letters. She also count's to 20 and sings. She has sensory problems. Loud noises ate what bothers her the most. Lately she plugs her ears with her fingers if she thinks anything is going to be loud. I was wanting to know if she sounds similar to anyone else's child. What worked to help in education. I am looking into preschools right now. They have a aba school but I'm hesitant about aba. What… read more

Repeating A School Year
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

We would like my mildly autistic son to repeat the school year. how did you succeed (or not) in making this happen. He just turned 5. He is not age appropriate for kindergarten.

A MyAutismTeam Member

This is obviously my opinion but based on what you have posted my feeling is it may benefit him a lot to repeat kindergarten. Some responses sounded like the were talking about your son "starting"… read more
