I'm an nanny to an amazing little girl who was just diagnosed with autism today. I have been with her for 6 months, and in that time I have done nothing but research and absorb information. I've been delving into the world of autism for some time now, but for Lillys parent, this is all very new. Are there any good books that would help them with this process? What was it like for you as a parent? What helped? I can only imagine what they are feeling.
....and it has been very enlightening to read a story about someone that has learned to live successful with ASD.
Curious, are there children diagnosed as level 2/3 that are able to ever communicate verbally successfully? Our son is 2 1/2 and non verbal currently. Hes in speech therapy 4xwk and im wondering if verbal communication could be a possibility down the line? As long as hes able to communicate with us in some fashion i guess thats all that matters but how wonderful would it be to hear him talk.
My son is 3 1/2 and after almost a year of therapy he is finally saying 1 or 2 word phrases. Like someone else said he is not conversational but that is ok. I been told me teaching him sign language… read more
So, I saw this add for a program for our kids that claims 100% positive results. Apparently, it is tailored to each individual child to take specific steps to improve their behavior, diets, social skills, etc. without the use of ABA. I had a one on one call with the founder last week and she claims to have a daughter on the spectrum that has learned to thrive through her program and her website touts other testimonials of people who have seen social, emotional, and verbal improvements in their… read more
I'm coming back to this after having seen the positive reviews left by certain users, and also the comments from someone claiming to be Cindy. As an autist myself, I have questions:

If so how did they do this.
The earlier you get services for them the better. My granddaughter is not on the spectrum any more.
If it was definitely genetic they would have revealed it by now as they are always saying they “don’t know” the cause. I find that hard to believe. Also, if was something genetic or a DNA abnormality… read more
Help my ex wont give my son his meds on the weekends or vacation time he has him. so my son goes days without it and comes home more upset and violent with his sisters and me. I have try to talk to his father about making sure that he gets it but got told that he can give it to himself which the doctor says no because of where he is on the spectrum. I have tired talking to DFCS where I live and got told they cant do anything because I have the child most of the time. What else can I do because… read more
It is a form of negligence called medical negligence, I believe, for a parent to not give meds. I’m shocked that DCFS won’t do anything! CPS? My ex is the same but my child is only on meds when she is… read more
I recommend "Play to Talk" by James MacDonald.
I wrote about it and I'm curious to know what this autism community thinks. You can find my post here: http://www.whininginmysleep.com

Hi folks
I work for a company that recognizes April being Autism month. Instead of HR printing out Wikipedia tid bits I thought that perhaps I could use the display to actually educate
I googled infographics and sadly some of them actually had things like "often people with autism are gifted in music and art " and other such stereotypes
What would YOU like people who aren't on the ASD tip to know to help them interact with, understand people on the spectrum?
I try not to be bitter as I had no… read more
I would like people to know that individuals on the spectrum need to be looked after and protected. A message to people is that they can step up to help at anytime. I am glad to hear that… read more
How would I explain my son that he is a high function autistic boy? I'm really scared of his reaction he is 11 years old.
