My daughter (7 years old) already has an ASD diagnosis through our Regional Center. She received it years ago after already having received nearly two years of related services. She is what many would term "high-functioning" as she's mainstreamed at school with only pull out services for speech. This next school year she will also be pulled out for social behavior type classes.
I know anxiety can go hand-in-hand with ASD. More and more of her behaviors appear to me to be in response to… read more
If she’s now of school age (maybe depending on each state but) they typically have a kind of revaluation at that age and you’d be able to discuss the changes/behaviors that you’re seeing. Sometimes an… read more
We found music therapy after number of sessions helped - they have in Mencap/charity he goes to but not all the time
Starting at age 3 our child had 40 hours a week of Lovaas therapy aka ABA. It was great.
ABA therapy is critical, especially with early intervention. It is meant to teach behavior not only for the kiddo, but for the family too. We've included our babysitters as well so they know how to… read more
My son, age 15, is obsessed with the military and has been for quite some time. He is very high functioning but still has some issues, particularly because he is also ADHD. When he takes his medication, he does very well, but there is still that inability to read subtle social cues, fixation on a topic, etc. Does anyone know if it is possible to enter the military with an ASD diagnosis?
Yes, that helps a lot! I will talk to my son about it and then reach out to our local recruiter, especially knowing that he won't get the recruitment hard-sell. Thanks!
Does anyone know what level of service Kaiser California considers ABA? Would it be a standard copay or a specialist copay.
Your ABA provider is supposed to collect your standard co-pay if they are contracted with Kaiser
He'll be 5 in July.
This is the mystery

The deadline for Affordable Care Act Enrollment has passed but we cannot wait for almost another year to purchase through that route. Can anyone tell me who I can call or how to purchase medical insurance that will cover most of ABA Therapy's fees?
Cigna would be great. If you have official diagnosis, the ABA is covered fully. On the other hand, it will depend on the plan detail as well.
Matt has trouble regulating his sleep and his emotions. He is very bright and wants to pursue a degree in Biochemistry. He did not succeed at a college transition program due to poor attendance at various classes and advisory sessions and has since been unable to sustain class attendance at community college classes- he lasts about 3 days and then keeps planning to go back and to ask for help but never follows through. Courses are eventually dropped. Now he is home and we don't know how to… read more
I had to look up what AFA is and looks like it could come in handy for ABA therapy. I am studying ABA therapy training now for a part time job, and also come in handy to help myself as a mother with… read more
We have in home treatments for the majority of our therapies. On the whole it is ideal to have at home but we do work in clinic and take therapies out in the community, classes, etc.
All that said, our BCBA will turn up to our home unannounced a few times a month. She doesn’t let us know when she’s coming and from the looks on the BTs faces when there is a knock on the door, they are surprised she is there. We have had other BCBAs in the past—one who turned up once a month, always planned… read more
