My son is 7 not potty trained yet. Me and my wife live in California. A treacher suggested we send my son to a place out of state in Virginia to help him more. This would just crush me. I think I would try medication and other therapy here before I even attempted that. What is everyone's opinion on what to do? Son says only a handful of words. Thanks all in advance.
I would definitely start therapies as soon as possible. Have you been working with your local board of developmental disabilities? It may be called something different in Cali. They are a great… read more
if my son is playing a game on the copmuter or ps2 and he loses he has a complete meltdown, and i try to calm himm down but talking to him only makes him madder and holding him makes it worse so then my dad(who doesnt understand autism) comes to the bedroom(which has no door on it for me to be able to shut, and tells me to just spank his behind. But I dont want to teach him to hit or slap any more than he does already, anyone got advice, i sure could use it
Just let it run it's course and try to "ignore" it, making sure he can't hurt himself by matter-of-factly removing objects that could cause him harm.
I’m listening to the audiobook, and I find it so interesting and helpful. I’m noticing my daughter’s coping skills and her improvement. She is communicating her needs to me and advocating for herself.
I'll have to check it out, thanks
One of my peeps at one of the houses I work at will do this, albeit very lightly. He's partially verbal; he can say "ok" "yeah" and "good night," but is not able to express how he is feeling… read more
We tried Vyvanse when my oldest was 7 years old. From what I recall, (he’s 17 now) it didn’t seem to have any noticeable effect on his hyperactivity or his focus. From research though I did discover… read more
My name is JC Ellinger, and I am a writer for Autism Parenting Magazine. I am doing a piece all about 504s which, unlike IEPs, parents may be less familiar with. If you have experience or a story you would like to share with me and other families, I am open ears (and eyes)! I have experience with the 504 and an IEP. If we could do a private chat. My email is (Email address can only be seen by the question and answer creators)
I have had my two children (6&4) sleeping with me for the last 6 months or so exclusively. Before that, my daughter with sleep issues would get up between 10pm and 3am every night and crawl in bed, or wake up no later than 4am daily, or both. For me it's less disruptive to my sleep to just have my kids in here, although privacy (didn't have much to begin with) goes out the window for the most part. So, I gave up. The benefits outweigh the drawbacks right now. Others in my household don't agree… read more
I agree that what works for your family is what is best for your family. Personally I never let my kids sleep in my bed. I have two neuro typical kids (now adults) and one teen with ASD and sleep… read more

My son is 12. but he has the same issues. So on days when melatonin (we choose not to take prescribed medication) doesn't work ... we will go out, take a walk and stretch, and do what most adults do… read more
