Why Bowel Issues Happen in AutismInteroception difficulties: Trouble sensing internal body signals means an autistic person might not recognize when they need to use the bathroom until it is an emergency.Sensory and routine sensitivities: Unfamiliar public bathrooms, bright lights, loud hand dryers, or strict routines around where and when they feel safe pooping can lead to stool withholding.Restricted diets: Selective or rigid eating habits often mean consuming fewer high-fiber foods, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.Anxiety: High baseline stress or specific phobias related to bowel movements can tighten pelvic muscles and worsen constipation.
