My 8 year old son was diagnosed with Aspergers when he was 5. Ewan has always been a little different (not in a bad way)! I thought he was just querky until about 2 1/2 and realized that we needed some help. He started the Preschool Program for Childen with Disabilities through our school district and learned so many skills. He hasn't needed any therapy other than his speech therapy he receives at school and attends class with all the other students. One thing that worries me is that the does… read more

My son's school district (howard county, Maryland) have very narrow parameters for defining autism and he does not meet their parameters despite having a medical diagnosis of HFA in a hefty neuro-psych report from a renowned children's institute that the school referred him to. He also has a hefty OT report that showed he has dysgraphia, gross and fine motor, coordination issues and low muscle tone. He has major sensory issues that impact every area of his life. He has an eating disorder… read more

Hi, we live in England but will be visiting my family in the USA for three weeks. I am worried about buying food. My son is a picky eater plus he is intolerant of dairy, wheat, banana and mango. Here in England most food is clearly labeled for food allergies, plus shops have a special "free from" section. GM food is not permitted, and most harmful artificial colors are banned.
I wondered if gluten free food is widely available in supermarkets? Do groceries have a "free from" section… read more

My youngest son Lucas is 4 and has a mild case of ASD. My oldest son Jacob is 9, and I realized that I have'nt really had a conversation with him on what is going on with his brother. Lucas is newly diagnosed and I have been spending so much time on researching ASD and dealing with our insurance, that I haven't taken time to explain it to Jacob. Last night at the dinner table, Lucas was flapping his hands and I heard Jacob tell him "stop it, it's annoying". I asked Jacob why he would say… read more
I was hoping to get to the library this past weekend and didn't. I would like to get him a book that talks about ASD.
My son is in 1st grade at a public school. He has a teacher, of course, plus a paraprofessional, an OT, a speech therapist, a bcba, and a special ed director on his IEP team. I’m trying to figure out who to give a holiday gift to, and what to give. We don’t have a lot to spend, but I want to show gratitude. What are others of you doing for your kids teachers and therapists?
Thank you all so much for your suggestions. I decided to do a target gift card for his teacher & para, and a card each for his OT and language therapist. Will try to get him to help, but he hates… read more
