Has anyone been a part of the Talisman Transitions program in Hendersonville, NC? My son is 20 years old, graduating from community college in the spring 2013, and will transfer to university in the near future. However, we would like to find out more about this program before he ages out of it.
TinaS: Did you son attend Talisman Transitions? My sister-in-law and I are caregivers for our niece and we are considering the program as well.
My son is currently in what they call Early Childhood Special Education Program at our local Elementary School. I'll like to believe he will eventually transition to the regular school system program but I'm curious to hear if this similar situation may have happen with any of your kids. In other words, is it something possible to transition from special education program to regular one?
Yes our Son was in early childhood special Ed in Northfield Il and transitioned with an aide to Kindergarten. We dropped the aide in 1 st grade and he went to the public school successfully until 4 th… read more
One thing that I believe helps is by talking to my son about the change and giving him as much detail as possible. Also I might show him pictures or bring him by the new place. For example when he was… read more
@A MyAutismTeam Member that sums it up for me. I loved that answer. I am going to live by that... every parent that has children with or without autism should relate
My 26 month old has gotten pretty good about laying down for bed when I put him in his crib. Should I transition him to a toddler bed soon? Is sooner better? Anyone recently done this? I'm worried he will get up during the night and I won't know it if he isn't contained in his crib.
I agree - if it aint broke, don't fix it. When he was two, we transitioned him to a toddler bed (we had to put all the toys away each night and the door locked from the outside - we knew that he was… read more
Rachel washes the dishes and will dry her hands in the middle 100 times. She will put gloves on to push the stuff down the food disposal, She doesn't do clay, play do or anything like that any more and when she does I can see she is doing it to get through it not to have fun. Getting her to participate in things is next to impossible because she doesn't like surprises. She likes to know what is coming. I understand this is typical but doesnt mean it should stop her. it does.
My son hated painting, play dough, anything messy. Now, he seeks it. We started by putting the "stuff" in baggies sealed shit. Or paint between sheets of wax paper. This seemed to help acclimate… read more
my son is going to a new home after 2 yrs of hospitalization. I just found
out that he will not be able to have contact with his family for a month.
is this the right approach? I'm not sure that's the right way to go with
him! any suggestions?
yes, and I'm putting my trust in these people who are supposed to be experts in autism. the problem is that my son is not a child, he is 45 and has a strong personnality
I'm afraid that imposing this… read more

My son is in Kindergarten this year and has done a total 360 in the past few weeks as far as his behavior. He usually loves school but this year has been rough. He doesn't want to go and has a meltdown if I don't "trick" him before it happens. He doesn't want to do any work other than what he wants to do and has become very combative. I have talked to his teacher and even sat and observed class...without anyone knowing. I would be concerned that sonething was happening at school but his… read more
I agree with the noise factor also have the teacher fore shadow movements the class is going to be taking . Ask the teacher to supply you with the pictures or titles of the foreshadow activities so… read more
My 10 yr old is in 4th grade. Middle School starts in 5th grade here. We are still having trouble getting him on track in school this year. I have our 4th IEP meeting of THIS school year next Thursday. I am mainly focused on helping him through the rest of this year, but is it too soon to start discussing the next transition? As of now J has to go to his "safe place" every day to avoid specials (gym, music etc.) He is still refusing to attend Resource (EC). Somehow without completing all… read more
