My son has Asperger's and is a senior in high school. Does anyone know of scholarships for kids with Asperger's or Autism to help them attend college? Thank you for your help!!
Anyone looking for this (or anything else) should really use Google which is an AWESOME tool. Google "Aspergers" and "scholarship" and you'll find several things, including this good program:

Is it possible at all? My family is not on board with my idea at all. My son will start Kindergarten this next fall, and thought of sending him to a public school scares me to death. He is very smart cognitively his main issue is social skills with children his own age. He has a very hard time with that and I cant imagine exposing him to a classroom of 20 children, transitions, and so on. Right now he goes to a head start program and a special needs preschool program.
If you decide to allow her to go to public school... make sure you have a bond with her teachers and supporting staff. With my son, I was a nervous mommy but I got familiar with his surroundings… read more
My son has been diagnosed with everything from ADD, ODD, executive integration deficiency, and finally now Asperger's. In school, they don't rely on medical diagnosis to provide support; they simply provide whatever support they feel the student needs, based on behavior and performance.
Well, the state requires a tri-annual evaluation of special education students to determine eligibility, and during this review (this year,) while they agree that he is definitely on the spectrum… read more
Follow your instincts, but just beware. Our district only gave certain services to certain categories/diagnoses. So in order to get an paraprofessional aide, one needed to be diagnosed with Autism… read more

I know there are many of us who live in states that do not require insurance companies to pay for ABA therapy and/or have lousy school districts that lack ANY ABA therapy. As a single parent of 2 ASD children, I am trying to find creative solutions to pay for private therapy. Has anyone received grants or scholarships with any success?
We have had ABA through Medicaid a few years ago
My son was not diagnosed with ASD until he was 11, he is now almost 13. Prior to that he was diagnosed with ADHD and ODD. After a reevaluation this summer it was determined he has Asperger's and ADHD. He has always had difficulty with aggression, but some of the more obvious ASD behaviors have increased since starting puberty. (More perseveration, vocal stimming, tantrums, threats, entering others personal space). The school has refused to acknowledge that his behaviors are due to Autism… read more
Thanks everyone! We submitted a request today for an independent educational evaluation so he can receive an Functional Behavioral Assessment from an impartial provider. The school isn't… read more
He is not good at math and has low muscle tone so things that a normal teenager may do he has a hard time doing - bring in groceries or carrying heavy items. He wants to work at Walmart but I'm afraid he will struggle just to fill out the application. Should I talk to the mgr and explain his situation?
if he is old enough to be working he should have a vocational person involved with him through school.
my son was only 9 months old and he would make motor noises and spin tires on stroller for hours at a time. so it was pretty obvious for me even tho i didnt know anything about autism really. it took me years tho to get the drs to listen to me. now hes so severe they scaled him an 11 on a 1-10.
Oh I definitely will not give up and I will be swinging the whole time. I really think that the only way I will get my son back is by going to the media. On may 6th I will find out if I must get my… read more

My son is barely verbal and i believe he needs someone to help him find his class in the mornings and make sure he doesnt run out in front of cars in the evenings while he's waiting to be picked up. I thought shadows were a requirement but this new school doesn't seem to be concerned at all. Are there requirements for public schools?

While some schools and districts vary in their areas of speciality...my son loves public school and is in a class room with a teacher and at least two aides for the 8 or 9 students. He is on an… read more
