Looking For Suggestions From Toronto Parents
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello Parents from Toronto. Seeking out for suggestions. I'm staying in New Jersey USA and need to move to Toronto with my 6 years old who is Autistic and ADHD. Any guidance I need to follow when trying to find a good school for my kid? Do the public schools provide good therapies? Or you prefer private? Based on my findings I have to decide a place to stay. TIA.

He will keep food in his mouth for as long as I let him. I try to dig it out after a certain period of time.

How Do I Get My Nonverbal Child To Spit When Brushing His Teeth?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Our pediatrician told us to keep using the non fluoride toothpaste until he spits. He sucks the toothpaste off and eats it. He will brush but will not spit. Also his breath is horrible. I don’t know what to do.

Autistic 5YO In Kindergarten
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son started kindergarten last week and he has a paraprofessional. It's been a rough start, my son is pulling things of shelves, makes noises and even kicked some people in the classroom. He's not violent with us, so this has to be related to being overwhelmed
Unfortunately his para is not trained to deal with autistic behaviors and the teacher doesn't seem to want to deal with the situation (I get it, she has many other kids to teach). Have any of your kids struggled in kindergarten? Did it… read more

Potty Training Nonverbal Teenager
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son was very close to potty trained from age 6-8 but regressed after some medical issues and lost the skills. 2 years ago he would sit on the toilet with the lid closed. In our current apartment, he refuses to get near the toilet and definitely not sit on it. Has anyone had any luck potty training with an older child who has been in pull ups a long time?

All I know is that a 'Distraction' (one that preferably makes them laugh) is a great motivator.
So have a Tech Device or even a simple toy as a distraction while they are in there.

Compulsive Throwing Away Things.
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son wants to throw things away. I have no idea why he wants to do this. But he wants to throw things away so badly that he actually will rip up items so he "justify" throwing them away. He throws away books, clothes, food, etc. It happens every day, throughout the day, and multiple times per day.

He's 18 so I can't physically stop him. I am able to delay him. He also gets sneaky about it to the extent of getting up during the night to throw things away.

Ideas anyone?

Did you ever find a solution to this? Currently dealing with the exact same behavior.

How Can I Get My Son To Stop Spitting?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Needing advice... I went to pick my 5 year old son up from kindergarten and I hear the words "we need to talk, your son keeps spitting in other kids faces." Anybody else deal with a spitter?? At home he has never spit on anyone, he just spits in the air.... What can I do to teach him that you don't spit on others or even at all (unless brushing teeth)? 😢

A MyAutismTeam Member

They said they couldn't put a mask on him, however the spitting on other kids has gotten better now he just spits in the air.

How Do I Keep My Autistic Daughter From Taking Off Her Pull Up?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My daughter is 8 going on 9yrs and she is the baby of 4 kids and trust me enjoys that fact lol. She has a big brother, my only son, who is also autistic and it's hard when 3 kids use the toilet fine and my youngest is content "going" NEXT to the toilet right in the bathroom. It's upsetting and I already suffer from C-PTSD, Anxiety and ADHD. I take my meds but when she does this, sometimes I just wanna cry. Me and my oldest daughter who will be 18 in just a few months work together to try our… read more
