Where Do We Start?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is 4 soon to be 5. He was recently diagnosed with PDD-NOS. We have started looking at schools and speech centers. Now I'm trying to find a psychologist and this is a struggle. I feel like there should be more done for him. Like I'm missing something. I tried reading all the papers and pamphlets and brochures they gave us but it is just overwhelming.

Melatonin Extended Release/dosage
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anybody know if it's okay to give a 3 year old up to 6 mg's of melatonin? The 3 mg is not enough to keep away the night terrors. We found extended release, but it's not a chewable, so we crushed it and put it in his applesauce, but he can taste it and refuses it. I also don't know if crushing an extended release pill ruins it or not. I don't know how ER works. Anyway, while searching, no one else seems to be giving their child that high of a dose, and I am nervous about it. I didn't ask the… read more

My daughter uses a compression sheet on the advice of our OT. She loves it.

If it continues for a long time, I would consider ruling out and potential medical issues

Night Terrors! :(
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Well tonight my son had his first night terror, and it was terrifying for us both. But since the discovery of my son being autistic, I don't know what I should do when these happen. When I realized he was having them, all I did was sing to him and rocking him while he screamed, hit, pushed, and cried. I was always told to not wake a child who was having a night terror....is there anything else I can do for him?

A MyAutismTeam Member

I'm not sure I understand why you would not wake a child, or anyone, having a nightmare. When I have a terrifying dream and my wife wakes me up , after a second of adjustment I feel a relief.

Tantrums And Meltdown
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My six year old has at least 3/4 tantrums and meltdown a day. Sometimes it's extreme crying in the middle of the night can't get him to calm down, can't talk to him at all. Any idea.

A MyAutismTeam Member

If the screaming is at night and he doesn't respond to you it could be night terrors. My son used to suffer from them. The doctor had me put him on a daily schedule. Also he was having a terror I… read more

When Should I Up My Son's Melatonin Mg? Or Should I Just Always Expect The Unexpected With Him Waking Up At Odd Times In The Morning?

I would seek the advice of a professional physician. There is no known side effects of melatonin — although it has to be prescribed where I live for children, it isn't an over-the-counter option.

How Do You Handle Night Time Waking And Meltdowns At Night?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My daughter is 4 1/2 yrs old. She wakes up between 2 to 5 times per night with meltdowns (crying, screaming, head banging). The meltdowns usually last about 15 to 20 minutes. If we have to restrain her from hurting herself, she becomes combative. It is awful to watch her go through this. Plus, we are all exhausted. Any advice would be really appreciated.

Something I found with the night terrors, and why investing in a nutritionist has perhaps worked for some, is that the terrors can be set off by stress in the immune system or nutrition wise. My… read more

Co-sleeping Yay Or Nay
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have had my two children (6&4) sleeping with me for the last 6 months or so exclusively. Before that, my daughter with sleep issues would get up between 10pm and 3am every night and crawl in bed, or wake up no later than 4am daily, or both. For me it's less disruptive to my sleep to just have my kids in here, although privacy (didn't have much to begin with) goes out the window for the most part. So, I gave up. The benefits outweigh the drawbacks right now. Others in my household don't agree… read more

I agree that what works for your family is what is best for your family. Personally I never let my kids sleep in my bed. I have two neuro typical kids (now adults) and one teen with ASD and sleep… read more

Melatonin Yay Or Nay?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

What are everyone’s thoughts about Melatonin? I have a lot of confusion about it myself. Some say no way it’s terrible for kids, others say it’s safe and helps everyone. My doctor didn’t quit answer when I asked he just asked why I stopped giving it to my son. Overall I just want to know if anyone actually has an answer. Not to use everyday but in moderation.

So, melatonin affects people differently. For our son, we have to give him melatonin. We have tried without, tried changing hours of naps and bedtimes, tried other remedies, tried no nap at all… read more
