hello,
my son is 4 years old and on the spectrum. Im having a hard time finding an elementary school for him. He starts kindergarten in September and I feel like every school I call for open house never knows how to answer any questions about children with autism. They're very dismissive and I'm kind of getting discouraged. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!
I am also in NYC and can relate. I went through the turning 5 process last year. I was told to apply to several schools while awaiting the IEP meeting which occurred sometime in May. Afterwards I… read more
I am looking for a elementary school in San Diego that have good special ed programs for my autistic son. We live in san Diego unified school district boundary. I wonder if it's complicated to enroll for schools in another district for a kid with IEP?
Chula vista school district is very good and have friends that send there children to there schools and seems like funding is very good and have great services offer.theres many ways to go about it… read more
My 7-year-old autistic son is high-functioning and goes to grade 1 in a regular school and regular class. He has some challenges with paying attention, sitting, and following some rules but he is doing well academically. His teacher has told us we should consider sending him to special classes in other schools. We feel that the teacher's advice is mostly for her comfort rather than the benefit of our child. Any advice on what should be our strategy toward this problem?
My son attends regular school, but he has a IEP (Individualized Education Plan) & other support/resources available for him. I think if the school can't accommodate your son's needs then consider… read more
Hello, we've heard great things about the school districts in Irvine. My 5 year old daughter was diagnosed with moderate ASD. She's been in a special day class in San Leandro, CA and has been in every type of service since she was initially diagnosed (private OT, ABA, Speech and music therapy). The school has offered the basics, and not even OT! After sending letters she will finally have an assessment. She is transitioning to Kinder. At this point we are willing to move wherever services are… read more
I cannot help you with good schools in Irvine. But I can tell you. California has a lot of fantastic laws that protect parents, especially when it comes to getting records And most importantly all the… read more
I'm looking for the best southern state with the best resources. We're trying not to move back to Ohio, but we're not receiving much help where we're at.
Not southern but I saw one individual say they were considering moving north. I can say that having my child involved with MMCC (Margaret Murphys Center for Children) has been awesome in Maine. We… read more
My son started kindergarten last week and he has a paraprofessional. It's been a rough start, my son is pulling things of shelves, makes noises and even kicked some people in the classroom. He's not violent with us, so this has to be related to being overwhelmed
Unfortunately his para is not trained to deal with autistic behaviors and the teacher doesn't seem to want to deal with the situation (I get it, she has many other kids to teach). Have any of your kids struggled in kindergarten? Did it… read more

Depending on where you are some states, have a really good special day and autism programs in the public school system. He’ll require you getting an IEP and learning a lot about… read more
My grandson is getting in trouble at school because he’s pushing or biting other kids. We’ve had many conversations, but he always gets easily frustrated and reacts this way. How do we help him?
Im so sorry to hear this. You must feel stressed about it. I agree with what’s been said. The behaviours are showing overwhelm or distress. This means staff need to be proactive. Sometimes those… read more
Hello. My autistic son turned 7 and I know he’s supposed to start school. The schools in our area do not have enough support/resource for him. He was referred to a private school for autism but he is on the waiting list and 4th in that list. They said realistically it may take 4 years to make it to the top of the list. What do we do in the meantime? If he can’t start school until years later, how will he be at “grade level”? Also, how does grade level and state testing work with children who… read more
@kgates-when the twins were little and a school in Chicago did not have an autism class or any support, I campaigned to get all of that started in this school on the south side. OMG it was so hard. I… read more
My son is refusing to learn in class and is interfering with the learning process of others. I am considering homeschooling or online schooling with my son. My son does participate in social groups outside of school so that element will not be completely missed.
Every child has different needs. I tried zoom learning, but after 3 sessions my daughter shut the laptop and walked away. She needs structure and a teacher or tutor sitting next to her. If your… read more
